Drawing in charcoal and conté chalk on tinted paper heightened with white chalk. Atmospheric evening or night landscape with a musing shepherd with a flock of sheep. Feuerbach was very inspired by the antiques and lived in Rome for a long time. From his departure to Italy, Feuerbach painted in a classical-classical style. He paid particular attention to the harmony between color and light in his works. He mainly chose mythological and historical themes and saw his work partly as a continuation of the archaeological work of his early deceased (and always adored) father. A well-known painting from that period is his portrait of Franceska da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta from 1864. Later he made more monumental works, such as Urteil des Paris (1870) and Amazonenschlacht (1873), but he also depicted stories by Plato and Dante. .
